More of this review is about the installation experience than the unit itself. If someone else will be doing the installation you may want to skip to the "Actual Product Review" section.

The Avital 4103LX is a remote starter manufactured by Directed Electronics, who also manufacture the Clifford, Python and Viper brands (among others). The 4103LX (which replaced the older 4103L) comes with two one-way remotes and has no alarm features. Since my wife's 2004 Sable station wagon is not exactly high on the "vulnerability to theft" chart, the factory alarm offers more than adequate protection. Two-way remotes (which show on the remote when the car is running) are fancier but they reportedly chew through batteries quickly. Therefore I decided that a one-way system like the 4103LX would best suit our needs.

For years most cars have had additional security devices built into their keys. This is why keys now cost $30-$300 rather than 45 cents. Installing a remote... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars i am a professional installer and this is my starter of choice., November 7, 2013
This review is from: Avital 4103LX Remote Start System with Two 4-Button Remote (Electronics)
I have been an installer for 15 years and have been using DEI products the whole time. It is designed to be installed by a professional and if you cant do it, don't give the system 1 star. there is a reason why the shops that install them exist, its complicated and it gets even more complicated as the newer vehicles come out. Also, you cant do 90% of new cars without a bypass or canbus module installed along with the remote starter. This is a quality product and I order them to install for friends and family. The price is great if you can find a pro that can do the work for you. Stay away from the $20 DYI systems, they offer great detail on how to do the install but is the average DIYer going to know how to wire a 1 wire door lock system using relays/diodes and a resistors? wire a reversing polarity door locking system? Flashing a canbus module and wiring into the sensitive systems of a push to start? Think before you buy, if you can't set the clock on your microwave, you shouldn't... Read more

**I did not install this myself so my review is based on cost, research, feedback, and use**

I just to moved to MD and wanted to get a remote starter installed in my 2007 Ford Expedition in time for winter. I do *not* know anything about after market vehicle add on's (I keep my cars stock; ya ya, I know, I'm boring) and was nervous about buying something online but I read the reviews on Amazon, did some cost analysis amongst other websites, and thought, "what the heck, why not?" With Amazon's amazing customer service, and for the price that this was selling for, I knew that I wasn't taking on much of a risk.

The installer told me that this system is a great remote start system and after a short discussion with the installer, I decided to get the rear defroster option added into the remote start. The installer did not have any issues with this kit nor the bypass kit that I bought (Directed Electronics PKALL Encrypted Key Data Tranponder Bypass Kit)... Read more
